Huntersville NC History

Huntersville, NC was incorporated in 1873. Originally called Craighead, it is believed the town was renamed for Robert Hunter, a large land owner and cotton farmer, because of the Hunter family’s large presence in the community. Established in 1760, it’s the home to Rural Hill Farm, the first publicly owned sites in the town. Today, the farm stands as the Mecklenburg County’s oldest and largest site that is publicly owned. In the 1800’s the railroads came to town. The railway made it accessible, which was important for business to flourish in the area. Virgin Manufacturing Company a cotton mill encouraged the development of “mill town” on the east side of the railroad tracks, and a brickyard that supplied bricks for many homes in older sections of town were thriving businesses.

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church was the first church built around 1875, and backed two local schools known as the McClintock Academy and the Orr School; similar to junior colleges. There are 18 historical sites to see and learn about. A country drive still reveals the working farms that continue to reflect Huntersville’s rural heritage.
